Artist’s Statement

“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better”

                                                                                                Albert Einstein

I have always been attracted to and inspired by nature. I could sense the magical powers of the natural environment that surrounded me, and I believe that nature is more than what we see. My practice represents my connection to this world which I consider as my extended family. The images I create are like personal diaries; they represent specific places and times that have touched me emotionally. I often reference my own photographs, a starting point for my paintings, then I focus on what I remember and follow with my imagination. I rely on my own colour schemes and embark on a journey of discovery to explore various aesthetic elements. The results are works/paintings that blend both the observed and imagined.

Anna Korus is a graduate of the University of Alberta with the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art & Design (BFA) degree. Anna’s favorite medium is painting, but she also explores art forms such as drawing, photography, installation, sculpture, printmaking, and performance.

About Anna

Anna was born in Poznan, Poland, where she graduated from the Poznan University of Economics and Business with a Master’s Degree in Economics. However, her real passion has always been art. She explored painting from a very young age.  Anna belonged to an artists’ society in Poznan and participated in numerous art exhibitions in Poland. The most memorable exhibition is one that took place in The Royal Lazienki Museum in Warsaw.

In 1979 Anna immigrated to Canada, leaving most of her worldly possessions behind; all she took with her were her paints, brushes, and a canvas. In the new “home” she embarked on a different career at the MacEwan University library, where she worked for many years on collection development, as a research instructor, and in the library management. Anna curated many artists’ books exhibits and specialized in a wide range of subjects during her time at the library, including art history, design studies, and fine art, as well as theatre arts and production.

Anna’s desire to work as an artist has always stayed with her. While working full time at the library, she enrolled in the Fine Art program at MacEwan University and graduated with the diploma in 2012. Following her retirement from the MacEwan University, Anna decided to continue her education at the University of Alberta, where she graduated with the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art & Design (BFA) in 2020.
